Signs your child is ready to start child care

Readiness is not a perfect checklist. Curiosity, growing independence, and support through separation are useful signs to notice.

There is no single moment when every child becomes ready. Starting child care is a transition, and children often grow into it with patient support. These signs can help families think about what their child may need.

They show curiosity about other children

Your child may watch other children, play nearby, copy an action, or begin offering toys. They do not need to share perfectly. Interest in being near others is enough to begin.

They can communicate basic needs

Words, gestures, signs, and expressions all count. A child who can show that they are thirsty, tired, uncomfortable, or need help gives caregivers a starting point for connection.

They recover with support

Tears at goodbye do not mean a child is not ready. A more useful sign is whether they can accept comfort from another trusted adult and return to play after a hard moment.

You are ready to build a partnership

A child's readiness also depends on adults working together. Share routines, comfort strategies, words your child uses, and any worries. A steady relationship between family and caregiver makes the transition feel safer.
